Teachers of Portuguese
To celebrate the arrival of Mar E Floresta, the Portuguese Language Village, Concordia Language Villages announces a scholarship contest for students of AATSP members to attend the Portuguese or Spanish Language villages for the 2008 summer programs.
Since 1961 Concordia Language Villages has offered summer language immersion camps for young people ages 7-18. Programs in 15 languages provide language and cultural education year-round to over 11,000 youth, families, and adults from all 50 states and 32 countries. The Language Villages is a program of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota, a private, four-year liberal arts institution with a strong commitment to international education.
In July 2008, Mar E Floresta will welcome youth to a lakeside summer camp in Northern Minnesota for two-week residential immersion sessions. No prior knowledge of Portuguese is required. Program staff are experienced in teaching varying levels of Portuguese proficiency, from beginner to advanced. Participants, known as “villagers,” will study the language and culture of Portuguese-speaking countries and take part in a variety of educational and cultural activities to learn about the music, dance, songs, crafts, games and foods representing Portuguese-speaking societies. In addition to language and cultural immersion, Concordia language Village programs focus on developing global knowledge. Villagers participate in discussions of peace, environment, tradition, and politics, promoting cross-cult ural understanding and communication skills.
AATSP and Concordia Language Villages have collaborated to offer a scholarship contest for the students of AATSP members. Two one-thousand dollar scholarships will be awarded to Portuguese and Spanish language students. One scholarship will be provided to attend Mar E Floresta and another to attend El Lago del Bosque, the Spanish Language Village. Watch for further details in early winter on the AATSP website.
Registration forms for villager participation and staff employment applications for summer 2008 are now available online. To learn more about Mar E Floresta, or to read about the official launch event on Capitol Hill, visit www.PortugueseLanguageVillage.org
